Position Overview

As a key member of DNEG, the Technical Supervisor for Environmental Art plays a vital role within the department, working closely under the guidance of the Head of Department. This position is typically engaged in multiple productions, providing essential support and collaboration with Department Supervisors, Leads, and Artists. The primary focus is on developing, documenting, and enhancing artist tools and workflows necessary for the creation, modification, and placement of 2D and 3D environmental assets, including geometry, shaders, and images, ensuring consistency and efficiency at the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess the technical needs of ongoing and upcoming projects to assist Department Supervisors in identifying necessary tool or workflow enhancements for delivering top-tier environments within the allocated timeframe.
  • Collaborate closely with Department Supervisors and Heads of Department to align tasks, methodologies, and priorities with the department's strategic roadmap and future initiatives.
  • Engage in global collaboration with Environment Generalist Heads of Department and Technical Supervisors across various locations to maintain consistency in tools and workflows throughout the organization.
  • Ensure timely delivery of tools and workflows by effectively managing personal tasks, development teams, and interdepartmental communication.
  • Guarantee that the output from the department meets the required quality standards through the delivery of robust tools and workflows.
  • Serve as a liaison between artists and the Production Technology department, contributing to relevant committees to advance the technology roadmap.
  • Facilitate the transition of tool maintenance and support from the department to the Production Technology team, ensuring thorough documentation and maintainability of any code developed.
  • Oversee the scheduling and task determination for tech leads in collaboration with the head of environments.
Essential Qualifications
  • Comprehensive expertise in Houdini.
  • Experience in the VFX industry as an Environment Artist or 3D Generalist Lead/Senior on high-end feature films or television.
  • Proven track record in pipeline and tool development.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot scripts and templates effectively.
  • Leadership experience with a focus on training artists in best practices for Houdini, USD, and workflow methodologies.
  • Strong communication skills to convey visual concepts to the team.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to drive transformative changes.
  • Experience in creating comprehensive documentation for tools and plugins.
  • Knowledge of USD (Universal Scene Description).
  • Proficient in Python and VEX programming languages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine, real-time rendering, UE blueprints, and C++.
  • Experience with software such as Maya, Substance Suite, Speedtree, Terragen, and Gaea.
  • Understanding of PBR workflows and asset model/texture/look development.
  • Knowledge of Houdini contexts including LOPS, SOPS, and TOPs.
  • Awareness of Pixar USD APIs principles.
  • Comfortable working within an IDE and debugging processes.
About You
  • Previous experience in an artist role within a related field, providing firsthand insight into the daily challenges and priorities faced by VFX Artists.
  • Proven experience in developing systems for procedural creation and population of dynamic assets for landscapes and world-building.
  • A portfolio or showreel showcasing key competencies, including samples or documentation utilizing Houdini tools.
  • A collaborative spirit, eager to support and assist others within a global team environment.
  • Strong self-management and organizational skills, coupled with effective communication abilities.
  • A proactive attitude, self-starter mentality, and a desire for continuous learning.
