Perioperative Support Assistant Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Perioperative Support Assistant to join our team at Providence Health Care. As a key member of our Perioperative Team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our Operating Rooms and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide support and assistance to members of the Perioperative Team and their patients under the direction of the RN/MD.
  • Contribute to the efficient organization and smooth flow of the surgical experience for patients.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and safe environment while assisting other members of the patient care team in the preparation and maintenance of the Perioperative environment.
  • Complete cleaning/housekeeping duties as required.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team and be respectful of patients and families.
Perioperative Support Assistant Responsibilities in the Operating Room:
  • Timely and efficiently organize the Operating Rooms, including turnover between patients.
  • Support and assist with organization and preparation of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure supplies and equipment are available in a timely manner.
  • Under the direction of surgeons and nurses, assist with the positioning of patients pre, intra, and postoperatively.
  • Assist with patient transfer to and from the patient bed/stretcher, and to and from the units.
  • Assist with patient skin preparation according to established procedures.
  • Act as liaison with MDRD team.
  • Maintain specialty carts and equipment, keeping support areas/carts clean, stocked, and organized.
  • Assist with application of specialized dressings.
  • Support and assist with organization of emergency supplies and equipment as requested.
  • Ensure patient transfer positioning equipment is available and functioning.
  • Open sterile packaging as required, under direct supervision of a RN.
  • Transport specimens and retrieve any stat materials as requested.
  • Transport used/soiled instrument case carts, pretreated instruments under direct supervision of the RN.
  • Follow established procedures for monitoring function of blood refrigerators, and eye wash stations within perioperative environment.
  • Complete environmental preparation activities, cleaning, and housekeeping.
Perioperative Support Assistant Responsibilities in the PACU:
  • Timely and efficiently organize the PACU, including turnover between patients.
  • Transfer post-operative patients from PACU to post-operative care units following discharge from unit and assist with the transfer of the patient to the unit bed.
  • Assist professional staff with critical care transfers and high activity patient transfer to floors.
  • Must be aware when transport and movement of patients is necessary and imminent.
  • Assist, support, and/or enable the RN/professional staff to give critical care.
  • Manage the turnover of patient care area between cases.
  • Complete support activities, such as emptying and disposing of used medical equipment.
  • Responsible for disposal of used products from the unit, laundry, and garbage.
  • Clean transportation equipment and identify general needs for maintenance and repair.
  • Ensure equipment (PCA pumps, transport oxygen, transport monitors, etc.) are available and functioning and ready for patient use and transport.
  • Assist in the post-operative positioning of patients under supervision of the RN.
  • Organize equipment, supplies, and environment according to an identified plan.
  • Transport or receive all stat requests as requested and assist in ensuring appropriate furniture and equipment is available.
  • Transport beds, stretchers, equipment throughout Perioperative Services area.
  • Transport used equipment/instruments/case carts to soiled utility area and prepare for MDRD staff.
  • Follow established procedures for monitoring functioning of blood refrigerators and eye wash stations within perioperative environment.
  • Complete any environmental preparation activities as requested, complete cleaning and housekeeping duties as required, and assist with other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Personal Support Worker certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution required.
  • Certification in BLS required as per hospital policy.
  • OR experience (familiar with sterile techniques and opening sterile packages, patient positioning for OR procedures, setting up the OR environment in preparation for specific surgeries) preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year Hospital experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including pushing and lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Knowledge of cleaning products and their uses, including a basic knowledge of WHIMS and MSDS.
  • Must understand the concepts of and function within a sterile environment.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to practice aseptic technique.
  • Must be flexible and able to work all shifts.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (able to read, write, and speak fluent English).
  • Demonstrated ability to function as an effective team member.
  • Able to work independently within the scope of the role.
  • Able to recognize and prioritize workload.
  • Excellent attendance record.

Must be available to work all shifts; days, lates, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays as well as regular and all lengths of shifts, as required for this position.
