Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Compliance and Conflicts Counsel to join our General Counsel Office Department on a 6-month contract basis. As a key member of our team, you will support the overall management of compliance and risk matters, ensuring seamless operations and minimizing potential liabilities. This role demands strong negotiation and communication skills, with a focus on effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, including the General Counsel, Assistant General Counsel, and the firm's Audit and Risk Management Committee.
Main Responsibilities
• Liaise with professional liability insurers to mitigate risks associated with lawyer errors and reduce the likelihood of litigation against the firm.
• Work closely with the Records Management team to implement robust information governance and record retention policies, guaranteeing accurate and accessible documentation.
• Develop and deliver training sessions for lawyers and administrative professionals on ethics and professional responsibility laws, as well as firm policies and procedures related to risk management.
• Negotiate and draft agreements on behalf of the firm to minimize risks and secure favorable terms.
• Support the update, development, implementation, and communication of firm policies and procedures.
• Conduct thorough research on legal and regulatory developments and create informative memoranda.
Requirements
• Possess a valid license to practice law in Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia, and be in good standing.
• Bring a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a large law firm environment or an in-house legal department.
• Demonstrate superior legal research and writing abilities.
• Exhibit excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, when interacting with various stakeholders, including partners, senior management, and clients.
• Showcase the ability to balance risk management and practical business acumen.
• Display adaptability and creativity when tackling complex problems.
