Job Title: Special Education Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at School District #35. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing in their academic and social development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpreting in sign language for deaf and hard of hearing students during various school activities, including classroom activities, assemblies, and integration into regular classes.
  • Working with students one-to-one or in small groups to learn previously taught concepts through review, repetition, demonstration, and drills.
  • Assisting students with social interaction and understanding of their hearing impairment.
  • Implementing and monitoring behavior management programs, including observation, record-keeping, and follow-up.
  • Tracking student progress and communicating with the Hearing Resource Teacher.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of hearing aids and F.M. auditory equipment.
  • Assisting with student supervision, including crosswalk supervision when required.
  • Preparing teaching materials, such as display charts, flashcards, worksheets, and bulletin boards.
Requirements:
  • Grade 12 graduation and possession of a Special Education Teacher Assistant Certificate or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proficiency in sign language at a minimum of intermediate level 6.
  • Ability to be flexible to meet the varying academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students.
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate (or Standard First Aid) including sufficient medical knowledge to effectively cope with seizures.
  • Ability to interact with students in an effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion, and diplomacy in contacts of a difficult or specialized nature.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD) training on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
