Job Summary

The Rotational Freight Handler will be responsible for ensuring the smooth processing of incoming and outgoing freight at Wasaya Airways. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills to effectively manage freight shipments and maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Liaise with other departments to ensure seamless operational execution.
  • Operate material handling equipment, including forklift trucks, to unload and load transport trailers, trucks, and vans in a timely and safe manner.
  • Accurately perform inventory management, sorting, labeling, and warehousing of freight and cargo.
  • Conduct inspections of received cargo for damage, regulatory compliance, and accuracy.
  • Perform all paperwork and record-keeping functions related to shipping and receiving of inbound and outbound cargo.
  • Maintain a clean and organized warehouse, cargo storage areas, and shipping and receiving docks.
  • Ensure adherence to safety policies, practices, and procedures during all tasks.
  • Report defects found with allocated ground service equipment or ramp/warehouse supplies to the supervisor.
  • Accurately enter all incoming freight into the freight tracking computer software system.
  • Assist with ground crew operations as required.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of freight from aircraft when necessary.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving tasks when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Foster a positive climate within the workplace.
  • Perform and uphold Wasaya Airways' Customer Care Commitments to both internal and external customers.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Minimum Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Previous shipping and receiving experience is preferred.
  • Proven mechanical abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate material handling equipment, including forklift trucks.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Knowledge of filling out waybills is an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills, MS-Office preferable, proficient in use of internet and email.
  • Able to work in a team environment, as well as unsupervised.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
  • The ability to communicate in Oji-Cree or Ojibway is an asset.
  • Previous airline experience is an asset.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of First Nations Organizations is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Travel is required.
  • Transportation to and from YPL (out of YQT) is provided, if needed.
  • Food and Accommodations are provided (rotational work).
  • Overtime as required.
  • Weekend and evening work is required.
  • Hazards of the job.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, dust, fumes, and oils.
  • Indoor and outdoor work is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift or move up to 70lbs. Repetitively.
  • Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computers and peripherals.
