Career Opportunity at COSTI Immigrant Services

We are seeking a skilled General Counsellor to join our team in providing settlement services to Government Assisted Refugees and jointly sponsored refugees.

This is a full-time union contract position scheduled to work 35 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide initial settlement services, including grief and supportive counselling, to newly arrived refugees.
  • Conduct intakes and needs assessments to identify client requirements.
  • Develop and deliver Resettlement Assistance Program orientation sessions to facilitate client integration.
  • Advocate and consult with other social service organizations and service providers to ensure comprehensive support.
  • Provide crisis intervention and facilitate post-departure services, including school and English class registration.
  • Document client records and prepare reports for management.
  • Refer clients to community and social service agencies for additional settlement and legal services.
  • Provide translation and interpretation services as required.
Requirements:
  • Social Services Worker diploma or equivalent with relevant practicum experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing initial settlement counselling.
  • Demonstrated experience using RAP assessment tools to identify client needs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrated experience providing workshops on community services, health and safety, and public transportation.
  • Demonstrated experience applying Provincial and Federal services for refugee clients.
  • Demonstrated experience providing emotional supportive counselling and advocating on behalf of refugees.
  • Fluency in any of the following languages is considered an asset: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Somali, Amharic, Spanish.
  • Demonstrated experience providing services in areas such as wife and child abuse, LGBTQ2S, and resettlement.
  • Previous case management experience.
  • Knowledge of specific issues facing resettled refugees.
  • Ability to negotiate and advocate with mainstream society.
  • Demonstrated experience in data-entry, documentation, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of Internet, Email, and Windows software.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and coordination skills.
  • Possession of a current First Aid/CPR training certificate is an asset.
  • Required to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) Police check.
  • Must be fully vaccinated or be exempt from vaccination on human rights grounds.
