Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Clinical Reviewer to join our dynamic team at North York General Hospital. This is a full-time regular position with 8-hour shifts in the Program Management-Surgery Department.

About the Role

The Surgical Clinical Reviewer will be responsible for collecting and submitting reliable data to the ACS NSQIP by compiling, documenting, and entering high-quality data for all eligible surgeries. The successful candidate will work closely with the Department of Surgery to identify clinical quality improvement opportunities and manage special projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Identify surgical patients for inclusion in the Program through the application of Program inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
  • Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the Program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems.
  • Attends division meetings as required to report on data collection of postoperative occurrences.
  • Demonstrates applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
  • Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process.
  • Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the Program.
  • Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the program's database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
  • Reviews weekly site accrual report on the database and responds to accrual report alerts.
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline or equivalent.
  • Certified SCR or willingness to successfully complete the ACS NSQIP SCR Training/Certification Program.
  • Minimum one year experience in a surgical department, surgical suite setting, acute care setting, clinical research or medical records with coding and abstraction.
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite with advanced skills in MS Word and Excel is required.
  • Experience in PowerPoint and Outlook preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and be confident self-starter.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
