Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Urban Planning Professional to join our team at the City of Hamilton. As a key member of our planning department, you will play a critical role in reviewing and evaluating complex development applications.

Key Responsibilities

- Review and analyze development applications related to subdivisions, condominiums, part lot control, rezoning, official plan amendments, site plans, and pre-consultation.
- Evaluate the planning merits of applications based on legislation and policy documents, ensuring compliance with municipal objectives.
- Determine environmental assessments or environmental impact statements requirements, and negotiate planning requirements and conditions.
- Prepare reports to management, committees, and council, identifying alternatives, formulating conclusions, and recommending the preferred course of action.
- Present and defend development applications and associated recommendations to committees and council.
- Liaise with applicants, developers, area residents, elected officials, and agencies on planning matters and development application policies.
- Conduct research for special studies and reports, collecting, evaluating, and summarizing data, compiling and analyzing statistics.

Requirements

- Degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a directly related field, with a minimum of two years of professional experience in a relevant area of land use planning.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with excellent analytical skills, research abilities, problem-solving skills, and strong communication skills.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Planning Act and relevant federal and provincial policy and legislation.
- Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners, and experience with Microsoft Office.
- Strong customer service skills, with the ability to receive and answer inquiries from staff, public, and council on development-related matters.
- Proven organizational skills, with the ability to work with tight deadlines and competing priorities.
