Position Overview: The Lead Estimator plays a crucial role in the formulation of labor and material cost assessments for marine projects, ensuring that any modifications during the project lifecycle are accurately estimated and managed. This position also contributes significantly to the training and development of new estimators within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops comprehensive labor and material estimates, including all change orders as required, based on thorough evaluations of provided specifications, terms, conditions, and drawings.
  • Engages with suppliers and collaborates with shipyard personnel, contractors, and regulatory bodies to gather pricing and determine labor and material needs, utilizing past experiences to inform cost calculations.
  • Distributes tasks related to marine projects among the estimating team.
  • Reviews and verifies the accuracy and completeness of estimates prepared by the team.
  • Negotiates change orders with clients as necessary.
  • Maintains communication with clients and project managers throughout the project to ensure clarity on the scope of work and to identify additional opportunities.
  • Conducts research on specialized products and systems, providing relevant information to the supply chain management for informed decision-making.
  • Evaluates project specifications and client expectations by reviewing details and making site visits to ensure estimates are precise and comprehensive.
  • Prepares summaries for management regarding estimated labor and material costs, highlighting any complexities or special considerations.
  • Identifies and recommends cost-saving measures for change order work.
  • Fosters positive relationships with clients through effective communication before and after contract agreements.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance within the estimating department.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary education, along with a post-secondary degree or trade certification from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in estimating within the marine sector.
  • Experience with large-scale government contracts is advantageous.
  • Exemplary business ethics and integrity in all professional interactions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with a solid understanding of marine terminology.
  • Customer service-oriented mindset.
  • Exceptional analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to generate accurate estimates and interpret technical drawings and contract documents.
  • Ability to mentor and share knowledge with less experienced team members.
  • Familiarity with marine industry regulations and safety practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and internet applications.
