Lead Estimator for Marine Projects

The Senior Cost Estimator plays a crucial role in preparing labor and material cost assessments for Seaspan's projects, ensuring that any change orders arising during the project lifecycle are accurately estimated and managed. This position is vital in mentoring new and trainee estimators within the estimating department. While this role does not have direct reports, it involves coordinating and delegating tasks related to Naval Surface Fleet projects in collaboration with the Estimating Manager and Commercial Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops labor and material estimates, including all change orders as directed, based on thorough evaluations of specifications, terms, conditions, and detailed drawings or verbal instructions.
  • Gathers pricing from suppliers and collaborates with shipyard personnel, contractors, and regulatory bodies to determine labor hours and material needs, ultimately calculating project costs.
  • Assigns estimating tasks related to Naval Surface Fleet projects to the estimating team.
  • Reviews estimates prepared by the team for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Engages in negotiations for change orders with customer representatives as necessary.
  • Maintains communication with owners and project managers throughout vessel refits to ensure clarity on project scope and identify additional work opportunities.
  • Conducts research on specialized products and systems, providing relevant information to supply chain management and assessing item suitability for projects.
  • Evaluates specifications and owner expectations by clarifying details and incorporating amendments to ensure estimates are precise and comprehensive.
  • Provides management with summaries of estimated labor and material, highlighting complex work and potential challenges.
  • Investigates and recommends cost-saving measures for change order work.
  • Fosters positive relationships with customers through effective communication before and after contracts, ensuring satisfaction.
  • Offers leadership and guidance in internal mentorship programs.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 education, along with a post-secondary degree from a recognized technical institution or trade certification.
  • At least 8 years of experience in an estimating role within the marine industry.
  • Experience with large government contracts is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and ethical conduct in all professional situations.
  • Exceptional communication skills in English, both verbal and written, with a strong grasp of marine terminology.
  • A solid customer service orientation.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiating, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to produce accurate estimates and interpret technical drawings and contract documentation.
  • Capability to mentor and share knowledge with less experienced colleagues.
  • Familiarity with applicable marine industry regulations and safety practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet applications.
