Lead Estimator for Marine Projects

The Senior Cost Estimator plays a crucial role in preparing labor and material cost assessments for marine projects at Seaspan. This position is vital for ensuring that any modifications requested during the project lifecycle are accurately estimated and managed. The incumbent will also contribute significantly to the mentorship of new and trainee estimators within the estimating department. While this role does not have direct reports, it involves coordinating and delegating tasks related to Naval Surface Fleet projects in collaboration with the Estimating Manager and Commercial Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops comprehensive labor and material estimates, including all necessary change orders, based on precise evaluations of specifications, terms, conditions, and project drawings.
  • Engages with suppliers and collaborates with shipyard personnel, contractors, and regulatory bodies to gather pricing and determine labor and material needs, leveraging industry knowledge and past experiences.
  • Allocates tasks related to Naval Surface Fleet projects to the estimating team.
  • Reviews estimates prepared by the estimating team to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Negotiates change orders with clients as necessary.
  • Maintains communication with clients and project managers throughout the project to clarify the scope of work and identify additional opportunities.
  • Conducts research on specialized products and systems, providing relevant information to supply chain management and assessing the suitability of items for specific projects.
  • Evaluates project specifications and client expectations through discussions and site visits, ensuring that estimates are precise and comprehensive.
  • Prepares summaries for management regarding estimated labor and material costs, highlighting areas requiring special attention.
  • Identifies and recommends cost-saving measures for change order work.
  • Fosters positive relationships with clients through effective communication before and after contract execution.
  • Provides guidance and support in internal mentorship initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 education, along with a post-secondary degree from a recognized technical institution or relevant trade certification.
  • At least 8 years of experience in an estimating role within the marine sector.
  • Experience with large government contracts is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and ethical conduct in all professional interactions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, including familiarity with marine terminology.
  • A customer-focused approach with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven track record in preparing accurate estimates and interpreting technical drawings and contract requirements.
  • Ability to mentor and share knowledge with less experienced colleagues.
  • Understanding of relevant marine industry regulations and safety practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and internet research.
