Unit Overview

The Juravinski Cancer Centre Clinics (JCC Clinics) deliver essential services aimed at facilitating consultations and planning specialized care, treatment, and follow-up for patients diagnosed with cancer. These clinics provide outpatient care across seven extensive facilities, addressing various disease sites and treatment modalities, and serving approximately 400 patients each day. The unit comprises Specialized Oncology Nurses, Clinic Clerks, Lobby and Laboratory Reception Clerks, Clinic Health Care Aides, New Patient Referral Clerks, and Patient Registration Clerks, all collaborating with physicians and interprofessional health professionals.

Position Overview

As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) – New Patient Referral plays a vital role in supporting patients and families at the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC). Reporting to the JCC Manager of Flow and Operations, the RPN's responsibilities encompass working closely with newly diagnosed oncology patients. This position provides essential psychosocial support as patients begin their treatment journey. The RPN will conduct physical assessments, perform interventions such as dressing changes, assist with biopsies, and carry out other hands-on tasks, including injections and drain care as necessary. Additionally, the RPN will manage the referral office, evaluating and triaging patient referrals to ensure appropriate placement with clinical teams, scheduling appointments, and reviewing cancer-related health histories and clinical investigation reports.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday; daytime hours.

Qualifications

1. Valid registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse, eligible to practice in Ontario.
2. A minimum of 3-5 years of nursing experience in a hospital or outpatient environment.
3. Recent experience in oncology nursing (preferably in an outpatient surgical setting) within the last 2 years.
4. Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology is considered an asset.
5. Current certifications in Physical Assessment and Health History Taking (or equivalent), along with recent patient assessment training demonstrating competent skills in health history taking.
6. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making in assessment, problem identification, and care planning.
7. Proven ability to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team, including nursing collaboration with RNs and other healthcare professionals.
8. Capacity to function in a fast-paced and complex environment.
9. Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
10. Ability to prioritize tasks, organize work, and maintain accuracy during high-activity periods.
11. Commitment to ongoing professional education and development.
12. Completion of an entry-level approved foundational course specializing in oncology, or willingness to enroll within the first 30 days.
13. Proficiency in computer applications, including EPIC (registration and scheduling), MOSAIQ, Clinical Connect, MS Office, and Teletracking.
14. Keyboarding skills of at least 45 words per minute (subject to testing).
