Who are we seeking?

GHD is proud to host one of North America's most extensive tunnel design teams, presenting an exceptional opportunity for a Senior Tunnel Engineer/Tunnel Lead to join our operations. Our tunnel division serves as the Technical Advisor for significant projects, including major subway extensions. In this role, you will oversee tunnel project interfaces, balancing client engagement with technical oversight, mentorship, and project management. Your primary responsibility will be to supervise tunneling projects within GHD's Rail and Transportation and Water sectors, while also supporting other tunneling initiatives across Canada and internationally as opportunities arise. This position allows you to showcase your extensive expertise, leverage local insights, and engage in exciting projects that provide valuable solutions.

Business Development & Client Service Skills:

Your focus areas will include:

  • Engaging with clients, including transport and water authorities, as well as contractors for design and construction projects.
  • Facilitating interaction between Design and Construction teams, fostering relationships, and enhancing efficiency.
  • Successfully managing design consultant projects to meet time and cost objectives, engineering standards, and contractual obligations.
  • Exhibiting flexibility and resilience in addressing complex challenges, employing effective problem-solving methodologies.
  • Overseeing project and design management from feasibility and tender stages through to construction.

Specialist Knowledge and Experience:

The following qualifications are desirable:

  • Experience leading the detailed design of complex tunneling projects.
  • Supervisory experience in major interdisciplinary tunneling projects.
  • Comprehensive background in various tunneling methods, including cut and cover, TBM, EPB, and others.
  • Experience designing tunnels in both rock and soft ground conditions.
  • Expertise in rail transit tunnel and deep station design.
  • Familiarity with analytical and numerical analysis methods, precast concrete segmental tunnel linings, and shaft design using industry-standard engineering software.
  • Knowledge of various tunneling and shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment, and methodology selection.
  • In-depth understanding of settlement instrumentation and monitoring.
  • Experience with TBM tunneling and precast linings is advantageous.
  • Involvement in preparing Geotechnical Baseline Reports and reviewing Geotechnical Data Reports.
  • Experience in P3/AFP and design-build project delivery, with a strong grasp of Project Specific Output Specifications.
  • High-level knowledge of cost estimation and scheduling related to tunnel and shaft construction.
  • Experience in risk management analysis and client presentations.
  • Expertise in claims resolution and adjudication.

What you will contribute to the team:

  • An experienced tunnel construction professional with a strong technical focus and industry presence across North America.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field, with a Master's degree in Tunnel/Geotechnical Engineering being advantageous.
  • A minimum of 15 years of post-graduate experience, including at least 5 years in large diameter tunnels and underground projects.
  • A professional engineering designation in Ontario and other provinces and US states.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, capable of leading medium to large tunneling projects in transportation and rail engineering.
  • Proven local experience in either construction or engineering consultancy with a commercial perspective.
  • Success in meeting or exceeding the expectations of clients and partners while fulfilling organizational commitments.
