Who are we seeking?

GHD is recognized for having one of the largest tunnel design teams in North America, and we are excited to present an opportunity for a Senior Tunnel Engineer/Tunnel Lead to enhance our North American operations. Our tunnel division is currently serving as the Technical Advisor for major subway extension projects. In this role, you will oversee tunnel project interfaces, ensuring a balance of client interaction, technical oversight, mentorship, and project management. Your primary responsibility will be to supervise tunneling projects within GHD's Rail and Transportation and Water sectors, while also supporting additional tunneling initiatives across Canada and internationally as opportunities arise. Business Development & Client Engagement:

Your focus areas will include:

  • Engaging with clients, including transport and water authorities, as well as contractors on design and construction projects.
  • Facilitating collaboration between Design and Construction teams, fostering relationships, and enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Successfully managing design consultant projects to meet timelines, budget constraints, engineering standards, and contractual obligations.
  • Exhibiting adaptability and resilience in addressing complex challenges while employing effective problem-solving strategies.
  • Overseeing project and design management from feasibility and tender stages through to construction.

Specialized Knowledge and Experience:

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience leading the detailed design of intricate tunnel projects.
  • Supervisory experience in major interdisciplinary tunneling projects.
  • Extensive background in various tunnel project types, including cut and cover, TBM, EPB, road header, SEM, NATM, microtunneling, and other trenchless methods.
  • Expertise in designing tunnels in both rock and soft ground conditions.
  • Experience in rail transit tunnel and deep station design.
  • Familiarity with analytical and numerical analysis methods, precast concrete segmental tunnel linings, and shaft design using industry-standard engineering software (e.g., PLAXIS, FLAC).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of tunneling and shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment selection, and methodologies.
  • In-depth understanding and application of settlement instrumentation and monitoring techniques.
  • Experience with TBM tunneling construction and precast linings is advantageous.
  • Involvement in preparing GBRs, reviewing GDRs, and planning geotechnical investigations for tunnel and underground structures.
  • Experience in P3/AFP and design-build project delivery, with a solid grasp of Project Specific Output Specifications.
  • High-level knowledge of cost estimation and scheduling related to tunnel and shaft construction.
  • Experience in risk management analysis, evaluation, and client presentations.
  • Expertise in claims resolution and adjudication.

What you will contribute to the team:

  • An experienced tunnel construction expert with a strong technical focus and established industry presence across North America.
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a related field, with a master's degree in tunnel/geotechnical engineering being an asset.
  • A minimum of 15 years of post-graduate experience, including at least 5 years in large diameter tunnels and underground projects.
  • A professional engineering designation in Ontario and other provinces or U.S. states.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, capable of leading medium to large tunneling projects in transportation and rail engineering.
  • Proven local experience in either construction or engineering consultancy with a commercial perspective.
  • A track record of meeting or exceeding customer and partner expectations while fulfilling organizational commitments and deliverables.
