Psychiatric Crisis Care Specialist

This position reports to the Coordinator or their delegate and operates within a collaborative interdisciplinary team to provide psychiatric emergency services, crisis intervention, and stabilization care, adhering to the unit/program philosophy, competency standards, and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives Nursing Practice Standards. The nurse is tasked with addressing crisis/emergency situations for patients/clients in the Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit. Utilizing a crisis intervention framework, the nurse will perform a thorough psychiatric and medical evaluation of the patient/client, alongside a comprehensive risk assessment. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the nurse will contribute to the development of the patient care plan, as well as the referral and/or discharge plan, in partnership with the patient, their caregivers/family, and relevant community services.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training, and Experience
Current registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN. A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in working with individuals experiencing acute mental health issues and/or addiction, including experience with multidisciplinary teams, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Familiarity with pertinent legislation is essential. Knowledge of the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (2nd ed.) is required. Current CPR Basic Rescuer certification is mandatory.
Skills and Abilities- Competence in conducting assessments of physical and mental health status, as well as risk evaluations.
- Ability to implement addiction theories and manage withdrawal symptoms.
- Proficiency in applying crisis intervention and stabilization techniques.
- Familiarity with common screening instruments for mental health and addiction issues.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to establish therapeutic relationships.
- Demonstrated capability to organize workload and prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues, physicians, community agency representatives, patients/clients, and their families/significant others.
- Proficient in operating relevant equipment, including computers and associated software.
- Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
