Qualifications and Requirements

**Registration and Certification**: Registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant is required. A minimum of two years of recent experience working with individuals with acute mental illness and/or addiction, including collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is necessary.

**Knowledge and Skills**: A working knowledge of relevant legislation and the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (2nd ed.) is essential. Current CPR Basic Rescuer certification is also required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments of physical status, mental status, and risk assessment to ensure effective care.
  • Apply addictions theory and management of withdrawal to provide comprehensive support.
  • Implement crisis intervention and stabilization principles to ensure patient safety.
  • Utilize common screening tools for mental illness and addictions to identify potential issues.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams through verbal and written communication.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
  • Organize and prioritize assigned workload to ensure efficient care delivery.
  • Effectively interact with internal and external contacts, including healthcare professionals, community agencies, and patients' families.
  • Operate related equipment, including computers and software, to support patient care.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position to provide safe and effective care.
