Job Title: Specialist, Low Vision

At Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada, we are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Specialist, Low Vision to join our team. As a Specialist, Low Vision, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality services to individuals with vision loss, empowering them to regain independence and improve their quality of life.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive functional low vision assessments to identify individuals' visual needs and develop personalized plans to address them.
  • Teach individuals with partial sight how to maximize their residual vision, using a variety of techniques and strategies.
  • Recommend and train individuals in the use of optical and non-optical aids, ensuring they have the necessary skills to adapt to their vision loss.
  • Educate individuals about their eye condition and vision health, promoting awareness and understanding of their unique needs.
  • Refer individuals to other internal and external services, ensuring they receive comprehensive support and care.
  • Handle public inquiries regarding vision health and low vision services, providing accurate and empathetic information.
  • Conduct research on new optical aids, adaptive equipment, and emerging trends in the eye care field, staying up-to-date with the latest developments.
  • Attend professional development training and conferences, enhancing your skills and knowledge to provide exceptional services.
  • Deliver public speaking seminars and workshops on low vision services and related topics, educating community agencies, groups, and healthcare professionals.
  • Interpret medical information, ensuring accurate and effective communication with individuals and healthcare teams.
  • Perform administrative duties, including data input, documentation of assessments, and applicable subsidy program management.
Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, pathology, and low vision rehabilitation, including optical and non-optical aids, visual skills, and adaptive technology.
  • Ability to facilitate group education, promoting engagement and understanding among individuals with vision loss.
  • Knowledgeable about disabilities and all life stages, from children to seniors, ensuring a comprehensive approach to service delivery.
  • Decision-making and professional judgment, with a mature and professional attitude.
  • Self-directed, organized, and excellent attention to detail, with a commitment to individual-centered care.
  • Graduate from a post-secondary institution with a major in healthcare or vision, or equivalent certification in low vision therapy or orthoptics.
  • Eligible for ACVREP certification, with a high level of competency in relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and math skills, with proficiency in French considered an asset.
Work Environment:

As a Specialist, Low Vision, you will work in office centers, individual homes, and the community, providing services that cater to the unique needs of individuals with vision loss. You will be required to travel and work flexible hours, ensuring that you can adapt to the diverse needs of our clients.
