Position Overview

The Lead Nursing Coordinator is a Registered Nurse (RN) who exemplifies clinical excellence and adheres to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) practice standards and core competencies, alongside the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre (SRHC). This role involves working collaboratively within an interprofessional healthcare team.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate motivation, self-direction, and be an integral member of a dynamic interprofessional team focused on delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring efficient patient flow. The Lead Nursing Coordinator will be responsible for providing exceptional care to a varied acute medical-surgical patient demographic in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team (Discharge Planner/Coordinator, Primary Nurse, and Physician) to enhance patient flow and ensure timely admissions and discharges.
  • Act as a clinical resource for unit staff, optimizing problem-solving and possessing knowledge of necessary clinical resources.
  • Assume patient assignments as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all healthcare team members.
  • Provide daily consultation and clinical support to peers.
  • Assess daily staffing requirements for the unit and communicate needs to leadership.
  • Support frontline staff with problem-solving, critical thinking, and knowledge transfer.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate and unit quality initiatives.
  • Oversee the daily check of priority supplies and equipment, facilitating access to any missing items.
  • Participate in quality huddles and identify areas for improvement.
  • Maintain awareness of unit priority metrics and support the Five Patient Safety Priorities.
  • Promote organization and order within the unit, ensuring clear pathways and tidy workspaces.
  • Encourage team members to take timely breaks and manage assignments effectively.
  • Assist in the orientation and mentorship of new staff and students.
  • Serve as a role model, integrating safe and best practices into daily operations.
  • Escalate staff and patient concerns to management as appropriate.
  • Communicate potential quality and safety issues during shift changes.
  • Support staff during emergency situations.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within the assigned area.
  • Engage in corporate quality initiatives and effectively utilize available resources.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • BScN preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent acute surgical experience is required.
  • Experience in a Charge Nurse role is essential.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Proficient in providing leadership during emergencies.
  • Strong physical assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Ability to function independently and as part of an interprofessional team in a demanding environment.
