ROLE OVERVIEW:

Located at our R&D Facility, the Plant Science Researcher will spearhead the biological aspects of various projects aimed at developing a wide array of new plant genetics and innovative products for our clientele. This role involves engaging in research initiatives that encompass the cultivation of plants in regulated settings, focusing on new genetic lines, lighting solutions, nutritional inputs, substrate variations, and other critical factors. Additionally, the research will explore how different cultural practices influence plant development, including irrigation techniques, plant density, temperature control, CO2 enrichment, and more. The Plant Science Researcher will collaborate closely with the Genetics and Category teams to provide insights throughout the research process.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct and lead comprehensive biological research, compiling findings into detailed reports that yield actionable insights and support the development of new and enhanced products.
  • Foster innovation by engaging with industry experts, sales teams, academic institutions, and growers to stay abreast of emerging technologies and biological research methodologies.
  • Work in partnership with study sponsors and occasionally with other stakeholders in marketing, regulatory, sourcing, and manufacturing to ensure project alignment and resource optimization.
  • Facilitate facility tours and deliver presentations that showcase the effectiveness of our research initiatives to senior management, study sponsors, and key clients.
  • Guide and mentor junior biology specialists and technicians.
Candidate Profile:
  • Educational Background: A Master of Science is required, with a Ph.D. preferred, in a relevant biological discipline such as horticulture, genetics, or soil science.
  • Professional Experience: A background in horticulture-related fields, including controlled environment agriculture, greenhouse management, or hydroponics, is essential (3-5 years for Master’s; 1-3 years for Ph.D.).
  • Experience in cannabis research or with licensed producers is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with plant breeding, experimental design, and statistical analysis is a plus.
  • Proficient understanding of standard practices in controlled environments and soilless cultivation.
  • Proven ability to design and implement research programs aimed at addressing specific commercial horticultural challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively influence project direction and facilitate decision-making.
  • A strong sense of scientific inquiry, personal motivation, and networking skills to identify breakthrough technologies and innovative methods.
