FISH AND FISH HABITAT SPECIALIST

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) serves as the democratically elected National Government representing the Red River Métis, a unique Indigenous Nation in Canada. The MMF is committed to the stewardship of aquatic resources and the enhancement of fish habitats.

We are seeking to appoint one full-time Fish and Fish Habitat Specialist within our Energy, Infrastructure & Resource Management Department. This role is pivotal in strategically planning, developing, and overseeing the MMF's contributions to various fisheries-related initiatives, including regulatory assessments, aquatic species conservation, and fisheries management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft and submit program and funding proposals;
  • Oversee financial and physical resources related to fisheries projects, adapting plans to meet the evolving needs of the Red River Métis;
  • Compile and present monthly and annual reports detailing departmental activities and outcomes;
  • Ensure compliance with funding criteria through diligent monitoring of program report requirements;
  • Conduct research on fish populations and habitats critical to the Red River Métis, including traditional harvesters and commercial fisheries;
  • Monitor aquatic species vital to the Red River Métis community;
  • Collaborate with external organizations to conduct research on aquatic species of significance.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management, or a related discipline;
  • Extensive experience in program development and implementation;
  • Familiarity with traditional ecological knowledge and its application in policy development;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities, with experience handling multiple projects simultaneously;
  • In-depth knowledge of DFO agreements, licenses, and reporting requirements;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS being advantageous;
  • Understanding of Red River Métis culture and MMF services is a valuable asset;
  • Willingness to travel and possess a valid driver's license.
