FISH AND FISH HABITAT SPECIALIST
The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) represents the Red River Métis, a unique Indigenous Nation and People. The MMF is committed to the sustainable management of natural resources and the preservation of aquatic ecosystems.
The organization is seeking to appoint one full-time Fish and Fish Habitat Specialist within the Energy, Infrastructure & Resource Management Department. This role involves the strategic planning, development, and oversight of the MMF's contributions to various fisheries-related initiatives, including regulatory assessments, aquatic species conservation, and fisheries management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and submit program and funding proposals;
- Oversee financial and physical resources related to fisheries projects, adapting plans to meet the evolving needs of the Red River Métis;
- Prepare detailed monthly and annual reports on departmental activities and outcomes;
- Ensure compliance with funding requirements and monitor program reporting statuses;
- Conduct research on fish populations and habitats significant to the Red River Métis, including the impacts of environmental changes;
- Track and assess aquatic species that are vital to the Red River Métis community;
- Collaborate with external organizations to carry out studies on key aquatic species.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Resource Management, or a related discipline;
- Experience in program development and implementation;
- Familiarity with traditional ecological knowledge and policy formulation;
- Strong management and leadership capabilities, with experience in handling multiple projects simultaneously;
- Knowledge of DFO agreements, licenses, and monitoring protocols;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) being advantageous;
- Understanding of Red River Métis culture and MMF services is a valuable asset;
- Willingness to travel and possess a valid driver's license.
