About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Indigenous Relations Manager to join our team at Toronto & York Region Métis Council. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in advancing our Indigenous relations and engagement strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement effective Indigenous community and government relations strategies and programs to advance our corporate goals and interests.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to senior management on strategies and programs critical to our success in Indigenous relations.
  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with elected officials of Indigenous communities and government officials at the local, provincial, and federal level.
  • Apply judgment, discretion, and initiative in managing sensitive issues involving Indigenous communities and their citizens.
  • Lead the implementation of key initiatives to increase Indigenous satisfaction and enhance our organization's image/reputation across all Indigenous communities.
  • Manage project budgets and maximize the impact of each dollar, including negotiating best rates from external service deliverers where applicable.
  • Manage and supervise staff and contractors engaged in the delivery of Indigenous relations programs and projects.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of progressively senior work experience in Indigenous relations and engagement, stakeholder relations, land, or environment.
  • Experience working in Indigenous communities on major capital projects leading engagement planning and strategy, regulatory, capacity building, business, and employment and training.
  • Track record and experience in negotiations will be an asset.
  • Highly self-motivated and relationship-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Experience using stakeholder engagement recording tools (e.g., Stake Tracker, Borealis).
  • Exceptional collaboration and strategic focus, facilitation skills, and talent development.
  • Proven track record in building relationships with Indigenous communities and collaborating across stakeholder and business functions building trusted and transparent relationships.
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail with the ability to lead across functions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to think strategically and to implement strategic engagement plans.
  • Strong strategic planning skills and people leadership experience.
  • Ability to work as needed outside of work hours to meet business needs.
  • Able to drive results personally and through a team in a fast-paced environment in a timely and strategic manner.
  • Able to work collaboratively and build networks across business units and with Indigenous groups externally.
  • High degree of PC literacy, including MS Office applications.
  • Bachelor's Degree (4-year college or university).
  • Candidates who self-identify as Indigenous and would represent an additional team member with Indigenous lived experience are encouraged to apply.
