Watford, Ontario, Canada Waste Management Full time

As an EEO/Affirmative Action Employer, all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

I. Position Overview
The Landfill Operations Management Trainee (LOMT) role is a critical part of a structured training initiative lasting up to 18 months. Under the guidance of Waste Management frontline leaders, including Area Directors and Operations Managers, the trainee will gain comprehensive insights into landfill operations. The primary mentor will be the Landfill District Manager at the assigned training site. Through a combination of assigned tasks, a structured training program, and practical projects, the trainee will acquire in-depth knowledge of daily landfill operations, focusing on safety, environmental compliance, financial management, personnel oversight, equipment handling, community engagement, and waste management strategies. This program aims to cultivate future Operations Managers and District Managers, paving the way for advancement to Director-level positions.

Relocation is a requirement upon program completion (at company expense). It is uncommon for management positions to be available at the training location, which will be clarified during the interview process.

II. Key Responsibilities

Successfully complete the LOMT training curriculum, which includes foundational, intermediate, and advanced training levels, along with mandatory training modules via the WM Learning Management System. Actively participate in all required group training sessions. Gain expertise in landfill management, including fill sequencing, cover operations, waste placement, equipment and labor management, stormwater control, and traffic management. Develop proficiency in heavy equipment operation and maintenance. Learn effective personnel management techniques for site staff, including non-exempt operators. Understand landfill design and construction principles, including excavation, liner systems, slope stability, and leachate and gas control systems. Acquire knowledge in leachate and landfill gas management, including renewable energy operations related to landfill gas systems. Engage with community relations through participation in public events and initiatives. Understand environmental monitoring and compliance issues, including interactions with regulatory agencies and site permits. Learn financial and accounting processes, including reporting to senior management and operational proficiency in scalehouse operations. Understand waste stream pricing and sales processes within the organization. Commit to the WM Safety Program, collaborating with safety teams to foster a culture of safety awareness. Participate in operational reviews and provide constructive feedback to staff. Engage in mentorship programs and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned, including special projects and interim management roles. The learning experience will be hands-on and action-oriented.
