Watford, Ontario, Canada Waste Management Full time

As an EEO/Affirmative Action Employer, all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

I. Position Overview
The Landfill Operations Management Trainee (LOMT) role is an integral part of a structured developmental training initiative lasting up to 18 months. Under the guidance of WM frontline leaders, including Area Directors of Disposal Operations and Landfill District Managers, the trainee will engage in various responsibilities related to landfill operations. The primary mentor will be the Landfill District Manager at the assigned training site. Through practical work experiences, a comprehensive training curriculum, and hands-on projects, the LOMT will acquire a robust understanding of the daily operational aspects at a WM landfill. This includes, but is not limited to, safety protocols, environmental compliance, financial management, personnel oversight, heavy machinery operation, community engagement, engineering practices, and waste management strategies. The program is specifically designed to cultivate future Operations Managers and District Managers, paving the way for advancement to Directors of Disposal Operations or similar roles.

Relocation is a requirement (at WM's expense) upon completion of the program, as opportunities for managerial positions at the training site are limited. This will be thoroughly discussed during the interview process.

II. Key Responsibilities

Complete the LOMT curriculum, which encompasses Foundational, Intermediate, and Advanced training levels, and fulfill all training requirements through the WM Learning Management System. Participate in all mandatory group training sessions. Gain expertise in landfill management, including fill sequencing, cover operations, waste placement, equipment deployment, stormwater management, and traffic coordination. Develop a comprehensive understanding of heavy equipment operation and maintenance. Learn effective personnel management techniques for site staff through hands-on training. Understand landfill design and construction principles, including excavation, liner systems, and leachate management. Acquire knowledge in leachate and landfill gas management, including renewable energy operations related to gas systems. Engage with community relations through participation in public affairs initiatives. Understand environmental monitoring and compliance issues, including interactions with regulatory bodies. Gain insights into financial processes, accounting, and forecasting, with experience in scalehouse operations. Learn about waste stream pricing and sales processes within WM's marketing framework. Commit to the WM Safety Program and collaborate with safety teams to foster a culture of safety awareness. Participate in operational reviews and provide constructive feedback to staff. Engage in mentorship programs. Perform additional duties as assigned, including special projects and interim management roles, with a focus on experiential learning.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities
This position may involve occasional leadership responsibilities throughout the training program.
