Role Overview: The Director of Employee Relations and Health Initiatives is responsible for steering and nurturing labor and employee relations throughout the institution, along with overseeing health and wellness services and programs. This role is pivotal in fostering a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic workplace where all individuals and communities can thrive, aligning with Sheridan's strategic vision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and direction on all labor and employee relations activities, ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive work environment while adhering to relevant employment laws and policies.
- Collaborate with the Office of Inclusive Communities and the Office of General Counsel to enhance the existing employment culture and lead transformative changes in workplace practices that promote equity and improve employee experiences.
- Lead and mentor the Employee Relations Team, empowering them to act as strategic HR advisors to managers in achieving organizational goals.
- Oversee the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Employee Health, Safety, Wellness, and Workplace Abilities programs and services.
- Champion and implement strategic, institution-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing workplace wellbeing, aligning with Sheridan's Strategic Plan and HR objectives.
- Work collaboratively as a vital member of the HR Senior Leadership Team to establish divisional priorities and allocate resources effectively to foster a future-ready workplace.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels and articulate complex information clearly. A commitment to fostering safe, inclusive environments is essential, along with a strong aptitude for building relationships and community.
Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and strategic advisory skills are crucial, alongside a proven track record in change leadership and the ability to mobilize and engage others effectively.
Innovative thinking, combined with strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, is required. The candidate should also have a solid background in negotiations, mediation, and dispute resolution.
Qualifications:
- 4-year Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labour Studies, Business, or a related field.
- A minimum of 9 years of progressive HR experience, including 4 years in a leadership role managing labor relations in a multi-union environment.
- Experience in the academic or public sector is preferred.
- Proven ability to develop and implement organization-wide policies and procedures at a senior level.
- Strong business acumen with budget management experience.
- Certification as a HR Professional or Leader (CHRL or CHRP) is preferred.
- Training in investigation and alternative dispute resolution is an asset.
- Experience in equity, diversity, and inclusion training is advantageous.
