Key Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in the daily execution and oversight of the school's communication strategies. This individual will safeguard and enhance the school's reputation through effective public relations initiatives, brand development, event promotion, and website management. By crafting engaging narratives and utilizing targeted communication strategies, the Communications Specialist will help HIS fulfill its mission and amplify its positive influence on education and the wider community.

Through the promotion of stories from students, staff, and alumni, the Communications Specialist will collaborate with the communications team to highlight the dynamic culture and thoughtful leadership at HIS, showcasing the significant achievements that characterize our institution.

The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Headteacher and will provide support to the Headteacher, board members, and both administrative and teaching staff.

Core Duties Include:

  • Basic design tasks
  • Content creation, primarily for web platforms
  • Assisting in the creative development, coordination, scheduling, production, and dissemination of various internal and external communication materials
  • Management and development of website content
  • Support in organizing internal and external events, including planning and preparing communication materials
  • Active coordination of online and in-person events, including day-of logistical support
  • Photography or coordination of photography/videography for school events
  • Management and organization of photo/video archives
  • Responding to basic IT support inquiries from parents, students, and staff
  • Facilitating access to Google Workspace documents and troubleshooting access issues
  • Maintaining and implementing the school's social media calendar, including content development
  • Utilizing social media to promote school events, milestones, and news
  • Managing general email and website inquiries
  • Engaging with alumni

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in a similar role
  • Experience in internal and external communications, social media strategy, basic design, writing, event management, and basic IT knowledge
  • Familiarity with collaborative digital resources, including controlled access documents and media files
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly for web content
  • Strong organizational and technical abilities
  • Professional demeanor suitable for a pre-primary to grade 9 educational environment
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff, students, parents, and alumni
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented, dynamic environment, with a willingness to assist where needed
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work for meetings and special events
  • Recent results from a Criminal Record Check with VSS and a Child Abuse Registry Check (upon hiring)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Google Workspace environment
  • Basic photography/videography skills
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva
  • Experience with email marketing platforms like Mailerlite
  • Possession of a driver's license and access to a vehicle
