Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate all preparatory activities for negotiations, actively participate in negotiation sessions, and assist in drafting collective agreements aligned with management's directives.
  • Conduct thorough research and analysis to inform strategic orientations, objectives, and mandate requests, while supporting management proposals and evaluating union demands.
  • Engage in consultations with managers, executives, and the human resources team to gather negotiation mandates.
  • Support negotiation committees in identifying critical issues and priority demands, acting as a strategist to develop effective strategies for achieving objectives.
  • Design innovative negotiation strategies tailored to the unique challenges of each negotiation, collaborating closely with management and committee members.
  • Prepare and present negotiation mandates for Board approval, assisting the Chief during presentations to address inquiries and highlight significant negotiation issues.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and expert advisor during negotiations for collective agreement renewals and specific committees outlined in various agreements.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to the CEO regarding proactive approaches to collective negotiations and labor relations matters.
  • Ensure compliance with collective agreements and manage any amendments, including protocols, letters of agreement, and grievance resolutions.
  • Share expertise with negotiation committee members while remaining open to learning from their experiences.
  • Build and maintain trustful relationships with union representatives and their members, acting as the employer's representative in union matters.
  • Address inquiries regarding the application of negotiated collective agreements.
  • Implement effective governance structures and grievance management processes to mitigate organizational risks.
  • Participate in mediation and grievance meetings as required.
  • Assist labor relations team members and legal counsel in specific litigation cases, including grievance arbitration and judicial reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial relations, business administration, or a related field.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in labor relations, negotiations, and legal affairs, with at least ten (10) years in supervisory or management roles.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of financial matters and the ability to develop financial models.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate effectively.
  • Team-oriented with a strong aptitude for conflict resolution.
  • Detail-oriented, autonomous, and adaptable.
  • Familiarity with the Canada Labour Code is an asset.
  • Experience with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is an asset.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Fluent in both French and English, with excellent oral and written communication skills.

The incumbent will frequently communicate and collaborate in English, both orally and in writing, with colleagues, unions, and other stakeholders across Canada and internationally.
