Design Technician Job Description

Ainsworth is seeking a skilled Design Technician to join our engineering and design team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and executing utility projects, with a focus on high voltage distribution lines and substations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Create detailed electrical and civil designs for overhead and underground systems
  • Review engineering designs and technical drawings
  • Prepare budgetary and detailed cost estimates
  • Perform voltage drop calculations and other analysis as required
  • Review construction in the field to ensure compliance with designs
  • Work with third parties to design make-ready work and facilitate the transfer of joint use attachments
  • Work with Legal to obtain easements and other access agreements
  • Field verification of existing site/electrical plant conditions
  • Prepare cost estimates, bills of material, and work orders
  • Develop and review cost estimation templates and maintain cost databases
  • Coordinate work with stakeholders, including customers, utilities, property managers, and internal groups
  • Respond to escalated customer complaints
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Perform all job functions in a safe and healthy manner
Requirements:
  • Certified Technician (CET) certification or working towards CET
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in utility design
  • Prior Toronto Hydro distribution design experience is considered an asset
  • Field experience is considered an asset
  • Experience with distribution design of overhead and underground systems, substation layouts, pole line design, and design package preparation
  • Proficient in MicroStation and AutoCAD
  • Adept in generating and interpreting electrical documents and technical reports
  • Knowledge of relevant electrical safety standards, legislation, and regulations
  • Knowledge of SAP and GEAR technology is considered an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to manage complex and time-sensitive projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively under pressure
