ABOUT THIS POSITION

At Black & McDonald Limited, we are expanding our Southern Ontario division. We are seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and dedicated professional who is eager to establish a robust career path. The Senior Mechanical Estimator will work closely with the Chief Estimator and is essential to our project execution.

This role encompasses a variety of mechanical projects across industrial, commercial, governmental, and institutional sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive estimates for materials, labor, subcontractors, and equipment for construction projects based on bids, quotations, schematic designs, and specifications.
  • Provide guidance on tendering processes, analyze bids, recommend awards, and engage in negotiations.
  • Establish and uphold the tendering process while implementing cost monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Coordinate pricing packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers, and architects regarding tenders.
  • Engage in site reviews, tender assessments, project closures, and operational meetings with relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain an updated directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Communicate and collaborate with engineers, architects, owners, and contractors, preparing economic feasibility studies for cost adjustments.
  • Maintain a strong industry presence to ensure ongoing work opportunities.
  • Stay informed about advancements in mechanical contracting to ensure estimates reflect the latest construction methods and practices.
  • Oversee material and equipment procurement for secured projects.
  • Travel to various project sites as necessary.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Technology with relevant experience OR
  • A qualified trades background in the mechanical field with substantial experience and prior estimating roles.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 10-15 years of experience as a Mechanical Estimator on ICI projects valued at $5M or more.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Advanced knowledge and proficiency in:

  • Meeting deadlines and working under pressure
  • Contract management
  • Construction scheduling and planning
  • Interpreting mechanical drawings
  • Trade fluency in plumbing, hydronics, and HVAC
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Leadership capabilities
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) credentials are advantageous
  • Project management experience is a plus

Proficient in:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Autobid Mechanical (QuickPen)
  • Accubid Change Order Pro
