Alberta Health Services is seeking a detail-oriented Health Information Management Professional to join our Cancer Research and Analytics team as a Cancer Registrar.
The Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR) is a population-based registry that records and maintains data on all new cancer cases and cancer deaths occurring in the province. Accurate and reliable cancer data is essential for cancer surveillance and research, as well as planning and evaluating cancer care programs to improve patient care.
The Cancer Registrar I (CR I) is responsible for accurately coding using national and international coding standards, including ICD-O-3 and cancer stage using AJCC TNM 8th and 9th edition, to record cancer conditions into the provincial database. The CR I must be self-directed and an effective decision-maker in order to follow complex hierarchical coding rules.
The successful CR I will work out of Edmonton's Seventh Street Plaza or Calgary's Tom Baker Cancer Centre and will enter an internal minimum one-year training program with the option to telework once minimum productivity and quality standards are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review legal hybrid health records for the purpose of Oncology coding and staging for the Cancer Registry using the National/International Cancer Registry guidelines.
- Obtain death information of patients, enter data in the Cancer Registry software program, and update medical records.
- Maintain quality assurance through annual and new clean-ups, perform audits relating to coding and abstracting on the Cancer Registry file, and actively participate in the quality control program as outlined by the Quality Assurance Committee.
Requirements:
- Completion of a diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program.
- Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
- Minimum 5 years working in a healthcare environment.
- Minimum 3 years of healthcare coding experience, working with patient charts to efficiently interpret and abstract health data, within the last 5 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- National Cancer Registrars Association Oncology Data Specialist (Certified Tumor Registrar) certification.
- Experience working with oncology coding and staging (e.g., ICD-O-3, ICD-10, and AJCC TNM).
- Demonstrated experience meeting or exceeding quality and productivity standards in an environment that tracks performance indicators.
- Experience working with AHS clinical applications (e.g., Connect Care, ARIA, NETCARE).
- Leadership skills, including demonstrated experience with coaching and change management.
