The Court Services Division within the Nova Scotia Department of Justice is committed to delivering exceptional service and ensuring a fair and accessible justice system, which encompasses court administration and security.
This Division offers administrative support to various courts, including the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (including Family Division), Provincial Court, Family Court, Small Claims Court, Probate Court, and Bankruptcy Court. About Our Opportunity
As the Director of Court Services, you will report directly to the Executive Director and serve as a key member of the Division's Senior Management Team, responsible for ensuring that the Division's policies, procedures, and activities align with its strategic objectives. Your role encompasses the overall management and operation of Justice Centres and the delivery of programs.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure the efficient delivery of court services to a diverse clientele while contributing to the corporate vision of the Division;
- Inspire and provide both strategic and operational guidance to staff, fostering strong relationships with team members, senior government officials, the judiciary, and the legal community;
- Promote a collaborative approach to planning, service enhancement, and problem-solving within the Division;
- Oversee the implementation of programs, services, and support for the courts, ensuring respect for judicial independence;
- Cultivate and maintain robust relationships with clients and stakeholders with varying interests;
- Coordinate, develop, implement, and assess new or revised legislation, policies, procedures, and program initiatives across all areas of court services;
- Manage provincial and court-based criminal law programs and services throughout the province;
- Oversee Externally Funded Programs delivered under Memoranda of Understanding and provide reports on activities;
- Participate in the Coordinating Committee of Senior Officials (CCSO) Criminal Justice Committees, Sub-committees, and Task Groups.
Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for this position, you should possess a university degree in a relevant field such as law, public administration, or business administration, along with several years of progressive management experience at a senior level within the public service or justice system, particularly in the realm of criminal law. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. You should have experience in several of the following areas: finance, human resources, facilities management, project management, program and service development and delivery, legislative and regulatory development, policy formulation, program evaluation, planning, and intergovernmental relations. Additionally, you should be highly motivated, results-oriented, capable of effective analysis and problem-solving, and able to collaborate with others to achieve shared objectives. Experience as a criminal law attorney would be regarded as a significant asset.

Working Conditions
- Standard work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
