Position Overview

Role: Director, Enterprise Data Architecture

We are seeking a seasoned professional with extensive experience in managing external Client Data and operational analytics within the realm of Enterprise Data Architecture. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in harmonizing customer data experiences across various business sectors. Familiarity with data architecture that supports a comprehensive customer 360 view is highly desirable. Experience in a contemporary AWS data architecture environment is also essential.

This strategic role involves being a key individual contributor within our Enterprise Data Architecture team, focusing on enhancing the Client Experience Office (CXO) by streamlining the client journey across multiple business units. You will be responsible for directing the architectural design of critical data systems in collaboration with Sun Life's business and enterprise partners, ensuring alignment of technologies, standards, and practices that empower Sun Life to deliver exceptional customer data and analytical solutions.

The Data Architecture team is at the forefront of implementing innovative solutions that drive business opportunities for Sun Life. Reporting directly to the Chief Data Architect – Global, you will work closely with the Chief Data & Analytics Officer – Canada and the Chief Architect – Canada. Your responsibilities will include spearheading the design and execution of advanced data architectures, such as event streaming and data fabric, to meet sophisticated marketing requirements. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with AI and ML initiatives within the customer data landscape.

While experience in AI/ML is preferred, candidates without this background are encouraged to view this as a valuable learning opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee the conceptual framework of the Client-oriented data domain and provide architectural guidance.
  2. Facilitate solution integration for data and analytical products throughout the CXO ecosystem.
  3. Advocate for data design across business units to support operational and analytical needs aligned with the Chief Data Analytics Office.
  4. Lead customer data domain strategy engagements with client executives and establish data architectures for national initiatives.
  5. Provide mentorship and support to project teams facing complex technical challenges.
  6. Develop data architecture frameworks and create playbooks for data technologies.
  7. Assess structural requirements for new software and applications within the customer data domain.
  8. Initiate technology proofs of concept and pilot projects in collaboration with Data and Analytics teams.
  9. Prepare and present proposals and evaluations for customer data tools and technologies at Enterprise Architecture Governance councils.
  10. Guide the design and comprehensive solutions for building data and analytics applications on cloud (AWS) and on-premise platforms.
  11. Coordinate with the Data Lifecycle Management program to oversee all aspects of delivery.
  12. Collaborate with the Data Science department to identify future needs and requirements in the customer data domain.
  13. Implement best practices in all solution architecture and design areas, including on-premise, Cloud (AWS), or hybrid environments, focusing on Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, and Cost Optimization.
  14. Mentor data systems designers (Data Architects) within your team and across other enterprise services or business units to foster solution development and the application of best practices.
  15. Establish governance on data architecture and technology standards, partnering with Data and Analytics delivery teams and Solution Architects.
Qualifications for Success
  1. Over 10 years of experience in technology design and implementation related to data service design and architecture.
  2. At least 2 years of experience with AWS cloud-based data architecture, including data lake technologies such as Glue, EMR, Redshift, and Lambda.
  3. Experience with open-source technologies like Kafka, Python, and Spark.
  4. A minimum of 3 years leading technology design architecture and analytics for external customer data, with knowledge of Master Data Management (MDM) preferred.
  5. Familiarity with RDM and Data Modeling techniques, as well as evaluating data architecture patterns.
  6. Experience working with data governance and its practical applications.
  7. Knowledge of Machine Learning/AI methodologies and technologies such as Sagemaker, R, Python, or similar is an asset.
  8. Experience in architecting data analytics and visualization solutions using modern cloud-based and open-source tools.
  9. 5+ years of experience in the financial services sector, particularly in insurance, is preferred but not mandatory.
