Role Responsibilities

The Recreation Aide will report directly to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager or their designated representative. This position is essential in planning, executing, and assessing activity programs that address the comprehensive needs and preferences of residents while ensuring their rights are upheld.

Key Duties Include:

  • Actively participate as a collaborative team member, nurturing professional relationships that enhance the workplace culture.
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of recreation and leisure services, including the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Facilitate and promote established recreational activities such as outings, exercise sessions, crafts, social gatherings, and games.
  • Develop and distribute monthly calendars and newsletters that inform residents and families about available programs and services.
  • Coordinate with external organizations to bring in-house programs to our residents.
  • Support residents in attending programs as necessary.
  • Monitor, document, and report any changes in resident conditions to the supervisor or nursing staff.
  • Ensure a safe environment for residents, families, and staff by adhering to safety protocols, emergency procedures, and proper use of equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with policies, ensuring confidentiality and security of information.
  • Engage in the orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, and educational sessions.
  • Assist in maintaining statistical records using software tools.
  • Support the orientation of new residents and encourage their involvement in community activities.
  • Provide guidance and support to volunteers, including performance evaluations.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Completion of Grade 12 Education.
  • A two-year diploma in Recreation or a related field; or a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate.
  • Experience in a senior living environment is advantageous.
  • Completion of a dementia care course is preferred.
  • Current First Aid Level 1 Certification.
  • Serving It Right Certificate.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certification is an asset.
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License.
  • All successful candidates must undergo a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check as per Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs, and comfort with cleaning agents and equipment.
  • Proficient in English, with strong reading, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
