Role Responsibilities

The Recreation Aide is accountable to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager or their designated representative. This position involves the planning, execution, and assessment of activity programs tailored to meet the diverse needs and interests of individuals, while upholding their rights and ensuring they are treated with dignity.

Key Duties Include:

  • Engaging as a collaborative team member, nurturing professional relationships that enhance the organizational culture.
  • Assisting in the development of recreation and leisure services, including research, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Promoting and facilitating established recreational activities such as outings, exercise sessions, crafts, social gatherings, and games.
  • Creating and distributing monthly calendars and newsletters that detail available programs and services for residents and their families.
  • Coordinating with external organizations to provide in-house programming.
  • Supporting residents in attending programs as needed.
  • Monitoring, documenting, and reporting any changes in resident status to the supervisor or nursing staff.
  • Ensuring a safe environment for residents, families, and staff by adhering to safety protocols and reporting maintenance needs.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation in accordance with policies, ensuring confidentiality and security.
  • Actively participating in the orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, and educational sessions.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of statistical records using relevant software.
  • Facilitating the orientation of new residents and encouraging their engagement in community activities.
  • Providing guidance and support to volunteers and assisting in their performance evaluations.
  • Performing additional relevant duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Completion of Grade 12 education.
  • A two-year diploma in Recreation or a related field; or a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate.
  • Experience in a senior care environment is advantageous.
  • Completion of a dementia care course is preferred.
  • Current First Aid Level 1 certification.
  • Serving It Right certification.
  • Food Safe Level 1 certification is beneficial.
  • Possession of a valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License.
  • All successful candidates must pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check in accordance with provincial regulations.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs, and comfort with cleaning agents and equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
