Position Overview

The Housing Support Specialist is an integral member of the EUTC Fresh Start team, dedicated to delivering services in a flexible, empathetic, and responsible manner to participants of the Fresh Start Project. This role follows the Intensive Case Management model, emphasizing the housing-first philosophy, which prioritizes community-based support, stability, recovery, and integration into the community. The Housing Support Specialist will receive guidance, supervision, and support from the Fresh Start Service Coordinator and the Program Manager of the EUTC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with participants to develop a personalized Service Plan aligned with housing-first principles, ensuring regular reviews and modifications as needed.
  • Partner with internal project support, including the Service Coordinator, to create actionable plans that facilitate the swift transition of homeless individuals into stable, permanent housing of their choice.
  • Engage with the Service Coordinator and external resources through the Doorways project to address participants' housing needs and preferences.
  • Deliver outreach, case management, counseling, advocacy, and essential services to participants in various settings, including streets, shelters, and hospitals.
  • Provide tailored services to each participant, such as housing placement, independent living skills training, vocational guidance, and family counseling.
  • Assist participants in financial management by preparing budgets and calculating expenses.
  • Educate and advocate for participants regarding their rights and responsibilities related to housing, employment, and benefits.
  • Conduct life skills workshops and informational sessions on topics such as substance abuse, harm reduction, and healthy living.
  • Coordinate and monitor referrals to community services, encouraging participant engagement.
  • Offer up-to-date information on community programs and services relevant to participants' interests.
  • Perform monthly apartment inspections and document findings appropriately.
  • Manage tenant keys for move-ins and develop a master key plan for program sites.
  • Ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are functional in each apartment and schedule necessary cleaning and extermination services.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records, compile reports, and complete other program documentation as required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree or college diploma in social services, or a combination of relevant education and training.
  • Proven knowledge of the Housing First approach.
  • Demonstrated patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and sensitivity towards individuals who have faced challenges related to the Child Welfare and Criminal Justice Systems.
  • Strong skills in assessment, case management, and advocacy.
  • Familiarity with local services and resources in supportive housing, mental health, counseling, and Aboriginal Culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Commitment to adhering to organizational policies and procedures, particularly regarding attendance and professional ethics.
  • Must possess a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
