About the Opportunity

POSITION SUMMARY

The Housing First initiative represents a transformative approach to supporting individuals with a history of homelessness and various challenges, including youth transitioning from care, mental health issues, and substance use disorders.

The Housing Support Specialist will report to and assist the Housing First Case Manager in managing daily operations and addressing the support needs of participants aged 18 to 30 within the program. This role involves building trusting, therapeutic relationships with individuals, focusing on delivering personalized, person-centered, asset-based, and trauma-informed support.

The responsibilities are executed within a trauma-informed framework, emphasizing teamwork and the establishment of collaborative and trusting relationships. Providing culturally competent services while prioritizing the safety, choice, and control of youth is paramount at The Link.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities of the Housing Support Specialist include, but are not limited to:

Cultivating supportive relationships with participants;
Assisting individuals in accessing basic needs, income supports, and securing and maintaining tenancies. This includes completing applications, obtaining information, setting and achieving goals, and connecting to cultural resources and community activities. Providing ongoing daily and weekly contact with participants and conducting assessments as necessary. Educating participants about their tenancy rights and responsibilities. Supporting participants in maintaining their living spaces according to reasonable expectations and program standards. Building relationships with landlords while advocating for participants. Mediating issues between participants and landlords, including follow-up after complaints and evictions. Collaborating with the team to ensure consistent support for participants in achieving their goals. Effectively working with partner agencies. Organizing time to complete tasks and administrative duties in a timely and professional manner. Ensuring all receipts for items purchased with program funds are collected and submitted to the Case Manager. Completing clear, concise, and accurate documentation, including incident reports and contact notes. Accurately entering and maintaining participant data in HIFIS. QUALIFICATIONS: Competency Requirements Knowledge of trauma-informed care; Proficiency in de-escalation and mediation techniques; Skills in crisis intervention, harm reduction, and conflict resolution; Understanding the challenges faced by the homeless population, including mental health and addiction issues; Ability to work independently; Commitment to person-centered care and meeting individuals where they are; Competence in managing difficult or crisis situations; Strong interpersonal skills; Familiarity with housing, health, and income assistance legislation (a combination of education and experience may be considered); Ability to navigate crises and support others through stressful situations; Knowledge of strength-based philosophy and solution-oriented approaches; Experience with diverse cultures and economic backgrounds; Knowledge of Indigenous culture and language (preferred); Awareness of community resources; Knowledge of Indigenous culture;

Essential Requirements

Community Support Worker diploma preferred or a combination of education and life experience; Experience in one-on-one mentorship with at-risk youth and an understanding of the realities of independent living; Flexibility in scheduling based on program and participant needs (days, evenings, and weekends). Willingness to obtain necessary training as per the organization's training policy, including Crisis De-escalation, Applied Suicide Intervention, Colonization Awareness, and Child Development; Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C certification, or willingness to obtain; Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, a clear Child Abuse Registry check, and a clear Adult Abuse Registry check, all completed within the last 3 months; Valid driver's license and acceptable driver's abstract (subject to approval); Access to a personal vehicle for work is required.

SALARY RANGE: $22.37 per hour, dependent upon qualifications. HOURS OF WORK: Full-Time (Permanent) – 37.5 hours per week, including days, evenings, and weekends.
