Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Chief to join our team at Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to our fire operations, emergency management, and administrative teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Provide strategic direction and guidance to our fire operations, emergency management, and administrative teams to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
  • Operational Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of our fire stations, including personnel management, resource allocation, and emergency response planning.
  • Emergency Management: Develop and implement emergency management plans, conduct risk assessments, and provide guidance on emergency response procedures.
  • Administrative Support: Provide administrative support to our fire chief and deputy chief, including budgeting, reporting, and policy development.
  • Performance Management: Monitor and evaluate the performance of our fire personnel, provide coaching and development opportunities, and conduct performance appraisals.
  • Community Engagement: Represent Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency at community events, meetings, and conferences to promote our services and build relationships with stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Education: Diploma in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in fire/emergency services, with a minimum of 3 years at the district chief or division chief level.
  • Skills: Strong leadership and management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications: Incident Command System (ICS) level 300, Blue Card Command Certification, and NFPA 1521, Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer – Incident Safety Officer.
