POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Ophthalmology is responsible for overseeing the clinical operations of the eye clinic (Kensington Vision and Research Centre) and surgical services (Kensington Eye Institute). This role encompasses all facets of the business, including patient experience, quality assurance, human resources, financial oversight, and operational efficiency. The Director collaborates closely with Kensington's Ophthalmology Medical Director to advance community-based eye care and establish a center of excellence for innovation, research, and education in the field of ophthalmology.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide administrative leadership and manage operations and personnel within the ophthalmology departments, including both clinic and surgical services.
  • Develop and implement a three-year business strategy for ophthalmology services and the Centre of Excellence at Kensington Health.
  • Encourage collaboration and communication with the Medical Director, physicians, and other stakeholders to align goals and ensure high-quality care.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards.
  • Stay informed about the latest trends in eye care services, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Represent Kensington in external ophthalmology groups, meetings, and events.
  • Collaborate with corporate procurement and digital teams to ensure that necessary supplies and equipment are available to meet patient and physician needs, while adhering to budgetary constraints.
  • Establish innovative staffing models and initiatives to balance quality care with fiscal sustainability.
  • Drive revenue generation and actively manage operational costs to achieve financial objectives.
  • Develop and implement quality improvement and patient safety initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Lead the creation and execution of research and education programs in ophthalmology, in partnership with academic and industry collaborators.
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities for growth and innovation in eye care services and technologies.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, inspiring the team with a compelling vision and coaching individuals to enhance their skills and achieve professional development.
  • Lead the recruitment and development of a high-performing team, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Implement effective performance management systems that promote high performance, recognize achievements, and address areas for improvement.
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment that encourages employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in administrative, financial, and human resource management within a research environment, particularly with funding organizations or large multi-user core facilities.
  • Experience in hospital administration and/or community-based program administration is highly valuable.
  • An ophthalmology background and/or experience is highly regarded.
  • Proven excellence in managing departmental budgets, contracts, and project costs.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Provincial Health Care system, particularly regarding provincial funding and decision-making processes to support strategic decision-making at both organizational and partnership levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate partnerships with academic institutions, industry partners, government agencies, and funding bodies.
  • Commitment to integrating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles and actively seeking perspectives from underrepresented groups.

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

  • Possess an advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., healthcare, life sciences, public health, business) or equivalent experience.
  • An MBA or Master's in Healthcare Management is an asset.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Pension Plan:

Employees are eligible to enroll in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) upon their start date.

Working Hours:

Day shifts, Monday to Friday, with no mandatory overtime.
