Position Overview

Join our team as a Registered Nurse specializing in Critical Care at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking dedicated Registered Nurses to become part of the Intensive Care Unit team. We invite you to explore this opportunity.

As a Registered Nurse in the Critical Care Unit, your responsibilities will include:

Delivering urgent nursing care to patients of various ages presenting diverse symptoms in unpredictable settings, as well as providing care to critically ill patients connected to life-support systems and those recovering from anesthesia. Acting as a key member of the emergency response team, stabilizing and resuscitating trauma victims, and preparing for disaster response. Enhancing the quality of life from the viewpoint of patients and their families. Collaborating and consulting with other healthcare professionals. Demonstrating leadership and expertise in nursing practices. Maintaining and improving clinical skills and knowledge. Participating in designated hospital committees and approved research initiatives as assigned.

The community is situated on the traditional lands of the shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation and is approximately 50 km northwest of a major urban center. Access is available via a ferry followed by a short drive along a scenic highway. The hospital is a 46-bed acute care facility serving a vibrant community. It provides a comprehensive range of services, including emergency care, community dialysis, mental health services, surgical procedures, and imaging services.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) is mandatory. Completion of a recognized critical care nursing program or an advanced emergency care nursing program is required. A minimum of two (2) years of recent, relevant experience is essential.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Comprehensive understanding of nursing theory and practice within a patient-centered care framework. Familiarity with BCCNM's standards for nursing practice. Proven ability in nursing practice related to the designated patient population. Competence in planning and executing care plans aligned with patient and family priorities. Strong interviewing and assessment skills. Ability to evaluate patient responses to care and respond appropriately. Adaptability to new or unforeseen circumstances. Proficiency in managing trauma in emergency situations. Skills in conflict resolution. Capacity to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to engage effectively with patients, families, colleagues, and external healthcare professionals. Skills in counseling and educating patients and their families based on their needs. Leadership and direction capabilities. Physical ability to perform the duties of the role. Proficiency in using medical equipment and supplies relevant to the clinical area. Competence in critical care nursing techniques. Basic computer skills to operate patient care information systems. Ability to operate necessary equipment.
