About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will work collaboratively with our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine team to support the pre and post-analytical phases of testing. Your responsibilities will include specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, and clerical duties. You will also be responsible for troubleshooting, customer service, and supply management. Positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling are essential to this role.

About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of medical terminology. You must have a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and be registered with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). You should also have strong written and verbal communication skills, basic computer skills, and the ability to adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing
  • Support the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine team
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and clients
  • Work independently and use good judgment
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate excellent customer service
Requirements
  • Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent
  • Registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects
  • Ability to accurately number and label specimens and file slides and requisitions
  • Ability to adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures
  • Basic computer skills, Meditech experience preferred
  • Access to reliable transportation
