Position Overview

As a member of the Leading Black Wolf team, the Youth Development Mentor plays a crucial role in offering transitional support to youth aged 16 to 21 who are transitioning from Child and Family Services. This position involves providing personalized mentorship to enhance life skills while also facilitating culturally relevant activities and leveraging community resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing positive and achievable expectations and goals with Mentees
  • Nurturing the individual strengths and talents of Mentees and tailoring support and resources accordingly
  • Instructing life skills, including budgeting, housing access, childcare navigation, and understanding healthy relationships
  • Engaging in participant recruitment and retention; addressing concerns and resolving issues
  • Exemplifying responsible, engaged, and positive behavior
  • Integrating traditional knowledge at all levels of the program
  • Organizing and facilitating a diverse range of youth activities
  • Promoting creative, holistic, and genuine mentorship and support
  • Communicating concerns, inquiries, and challenges to the Coordinator
  • Adhering to organizational safety protocols and procedures, including participant transportation as necessary

Ideal Candidate:

  • Proven understanding of mentorship dynamics with vulnerable youth
  • An active mentor who ensures participants can access resources without barriers
  • Capable of maintaining detailed case notes and producing reports as needed
  • Proactive in program planning, preparation, and facilitation
  • Advocate for harm reduction and trauma-informed approaches
  • Builder of strong relationships with participants and stakeholders
  • Demonstrator of cultural knowledge and competence
  • Familiar with youth and community resources, assisting in system navigation

Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-secondary education or a combination of education and experience
  • One to two years of experience working with vulnerable youth
  • A valid Manitoba Driver's License, clear driver's abstract, and reliable transportation
