Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Labour and Employee Relations Lead to join our team at Torstar. As a key member of our HR department, you will be responsible for developing and implementing labour management strategies that foster a collaborative and trust-based relationship with our unions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Labour Relations
    • Provide expert advice and counsel to leadership teams on various employee issues, including performance management, productivity, and absenteeism.
    • Conduct strategic analysis of absenteeism trends and recommend education or mitigation strategies.
    • Manage and coordinate Labour Management Committee meetings and ensure timely follow-up of agreed action items.
  • Labour Relations Expertise
    • Provide expertise on issues related to collective agreements, grievances, arbitrations, and general labour relations.
    • Lead assigned employee investigations as required.
  • Employee Engagement and Development
    • Educate client groups on the collective agreement through informal discussions and formal seminars.
    • Prepare mandate, draft provisions, and advise on collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
    • Coach senior leaders and managers to improve their leadership effectiveness and provide counsel and continuous feedback.
  • Talent Management and Development
    • Manage the talent review process and partner with leaders to create measurable action plans to develop and grow talent.
    • Strengthen the organizational capabilities by challenging the status quo and achieving a high-performing HR function.
  • Representation and Communication
    • Represent Torstar both internally and externally, role-modeling organizational values and fostering collaborative and accountable relationships.
    • Identify cross-functional challenges and opportunities and ensure effective and successful value-added solutions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of progressive HR/Business Partner experience within a unionized environment.
  • A record of success leading the labour relations function across a multi-union environment.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and results-oriented skills and abilities.
  • Exceptional business acumen and ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Impressive communication and collaborative skills to lead initiatives.
  • Leadership courage to try new ideas, make tough decisions, and address key opportunities.
  • Comfortable working on both the strategic and hands-on levels.
