Position Overview:
The Technical Operations Manager plays a pivotal role within the Site Leadership team, overseeing a skilled technical group of 18 professionals dedicated to the operational excellence of our industrial site. This facility specializes in the production of Phosphine and Phosphorus Derivative products, catering to a diverse global clientele.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in decision-making processes regarding plant operations and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate and prioritize activities among Technical Group members to ensure effective execution.
- Develop and manage the site’s capital expenditure plan.
- Collaborate with business teams to formulate strategies for enhancing site capacity.
We are in search of a hands-on Technical Leader with extensive experience in large-scale chemical manufacturing environments. Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of working closely with Site Leaders or Manufacturing Managers to implement site enhancements and elevate organizational performance. Candidates should have been integral members of Site Leadership or Decision-Making teams and possess a strong ability to manage a diverse portfolio of Capital and Technical Projects, including experience as a Project Manager for projects with budgets ranging from CAD 5 to 10 million or more.
Expectations:
- Support the operational goals of the site while achieving established Key Performance Indicators.
- Contribute as a key member of the Site Leadership team, involved in daily operational decisions.
- Lead critical technical initiatives and analyses, focusing on the development of technical talent.
- Oversee the three sub-groups within the Site Technical team: Process Control and Automation, Process Engineering, and Project Engineering.
- Responsible for the formulation of the site’s capital investment strategy, typically involving annual expenditures of CAD 15 to 20 million.
- Manage the Stage Gate and Approval processes for significant projects.
- Oversee the execution of ongoing projects and prioritize upcoming initiatives.
- Monitor project progress and performance against established plans.
- Adjust plans and priorities as necessary to meet operational demands.
- Collaborate closely with the Site Maintenance Team on Mechanical Integrity inspections and equipment failure analyses.
- Ensure effective coordination between the Site Technical Group and Production Area Engineers.
- Supervise the initiation of new project/process activities and lead essential technical decision-making.
- Support Health, Safety & Environment, Maintenance, and Operations teams in their regulatory interactions.
- Contribute to business planning and capacity analysis, including inputs for strategic planning and budgeting.
- Engage with on-site Research and Innovation teams for the introduction and scaling of new products.
- Adhere to key principles of Process Safety Management, including Management of Change procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Solvay’s procedures for Capital Investment Projects.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
- Preferred Fields of Study: Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering with a background in Chemical Manufacturing.
- Minimum Experience: 20 years in the chemical manufacturing sector with increasing responsibilities.
- Professional Engineer registration in Ontario or equivalent credentials.
- Direct experience in phosphorus reaction chemistry and handling hazardous materials.
- Previous roles as Site Engineering or Site Technical Manager with a focus on capital project execution and process improvements.
- Alternatively, experience as a Plant Manager in a medium to high complexity chemical manufacturing operation.
- Experience as a Project Director or Project Manager for capital projects valued at CAD 5 million or more.
- Strong communication skills across various organizational levels.
- Proficient in project planning and execution.
- Able to lead change initiatives, understanding their impact on Safety, Quality, and Customer satisfaction.
- Quick to learn new technologies.
