Calgary, Alberta, Canada The University of Calgary Full time

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is situated on the traditional lands of the Treaty 7 peoples, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuut'ina First Nation, and Stoney Nakoda Nations. The institution acknowledges the cultural significance of these territories and recognizes the presence of the Métis Nation of Alberta in the Calgary region.

As part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable academic environment, the Inclusive Excellence Cluster Hiring Initiative has been established. This initiative aims to enhance representation and support for equity-deserving groups within the university community. By aligning with the principles outlined in the Alberta Human Rights Act, we strive to create a diverse academic workforce that reflects the richness of our student body and the broader community.

The Werklund School of Education is inviting applications for the position of Indigenous scholar in Education at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) or Associate Professor (With Tenure). The successful candidate will focus on leadership, policy, and governance, critically analyzing educational policies and advancing leadership practices that incorporate Indigenous knowledge systems.

  • Applicants must identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) and provide verifiable proof of their Indigenous identity.

This role presents an exciting opportunity for distinguished researchers to develop and sustain impactful research initiatives that leverage Indigenous methodologies and cultural perspectives. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to secure competitive research funding and will engage in innovative research that contributes to the well-being of Indigenous youth.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring students and collaborating with Indigenous communities. Responsibilities include supervising graduate students, teaching courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and engaging in service and leadership within the university and the wider community.

As part of a collaborative network at UCalgary, the successful candidate will connect with various groups, including the UCalgary Circle of Advisors and the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement) team. The Circle of Indigenous Scholars offers a supportive environment for Indigenous academics to address relevant issues and foster community.

The UCalgary Indigenous Strategy, ii' taa'poh'to'p, serves as a guiding framework for the university's commitment to reconciliation and the integration of Indigenous perspectives into academic practices. This strategy, developed through community engagement, emphasizes transformation and ethical collaboration.

Applicants should possess a doctorate in education or a related field, along with a strong understanding of Indigenous communities and research methodologies. A record of community engagement and an emerging research agenda are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in K-12 education and collaboration with educational institutions.

At the assistant professor level, candidates should demonstrate an emerging publication record and effective teaching skills. At the associate professor level, a strong publication history, evidence of securing external funding, and experience in graduate supervision are required.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a comprehensive application that includes:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement detailing research, teaching, and leadership experiences
  • Evidence of community engagement
  • Brief description of future contributions to the field
  • Reprints of two representative academic publications
  • Contact information for three referees

All applicants must self-identify as Indigenous in their application materials.

UCalgary is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from individuals who will contribute to the diversity of our academic community.
