We are seeking a highly skilled Plant Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of our plant in Innisfail, AB. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the plant operates safely and efficiently, meeting its operational and financial objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, direct, and prioritize daily operations to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity.
- Prepare and manage operating budgets, controlling costs and ensuring financial targets are met.
- Develop and implement safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment for all employees.
- Coordinate with the team to optimize operating results, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes as needed.
- Work with the operations team and contractors to schedule maintenance shutdowns and repairs, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
- Complete and report on regular preventative maintenance to ensure maximum long-term value from equipment and assets.
- Collaborate with senior management to plan and execute construction and expansion projects, ensuring timely and within-budget completion.
Merchandising and Execution:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with growers, ensuring timely and accurate communication on prices, new crop prospects, and logistics.
- Execute purchasing strategies with the purchasing team, ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement of goods and services.
- Monitor and manage contract performance, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of goods and services.
- Coordinate with growers, plant team, rails, and logistics team to schedule delivery, cleaning, and loading to meet shipping position and quality requirements.
- Communicate logistics positions with relevant departments and troubleshoot any issues that arise.
Quality Control:
- Implement and maintain grain quality control protocols, ensuring the highest quality products are delivered to customers.
- Work closely with SGS and traders to ensure quality control and discrepancies are addressed promptly.
- Handle quality discrepancies and payment settlements, ensuring timely and accurate resolution.
Safety:
- Ensure all safety regulations are met and adhered to, maintaining a safe working environment for all employees.
- Report and track all incidents, investigating and addressing any safety concerns promptly.
- Communicate, document, and trend hazard identifications and controls, ensuring a proactive approach to safety.
- Provide safety training and ensure employees are trained to complete their tasks safely.
- Act as a safety role model, setting a positive safety example for all staff.
- Implement controls to reduce risks to people and equipment, ensuring a safe working environment.
Procurement and Execution:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with growers, ensuring timely and accurate communication on prices, new crop prospects, and logistics.
- Attend trade shows and local meetings as necessary, staying informed on market trends and competitor activity.
- Relay market information to the trade team, including competitor bids, grower % sold, and returns per acre in the area.
- Run a harvest sampling program to ensure awareness of grower quality and availability.
- Execute purchasing strategies with the purchasing team, ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement of goods and services.
- Communicate logistics positions with relevant departments and troubleshoot any issues that arise.
- Contribute to the evaluation of domestic sales opportunities, presenting sales opportunities where available.
Accounts and Contract Management:
- Manage procurement and grower contracts, ensuring timely and accurate execution.
- Monitor contract performance, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of goods and services.
- Develop a grower base through thorough and timely customer service, ensuring strong relationships and repeat business.
- Develop complete and accurate knowledge of current contract terms and positions for each grower, using summary reports in Salesforce.
- Coordinate with growers, plant team, rails, and logistics team to schedule delivery, cleaning, and loading to meet shipping position and quality requirements.
- Observe short and long positions of each commodity in the context of mark-to-market.
- Handle over/underweight settlements, washout contracts, etc., and make notes/adjustments accordingly in Salesforce.
Teamwork and HR:
- Inform teams of any issues or items that would affect the delivery or execution of grower contracts immediately.
- Work with human resources to hire, exit staff, schedule shifts, and sign off leaves.
- Motivate staff, assess performance, identify barriers to job duties, and recommend solutions.
- Work closely with other plants and departments to ensure effective collaboration.
- Develop teamwork to ensure effective functioning of the plant and connectivity between shifts.
- Train and/or share knowledge with the Canada teams.
- Foster a team culture.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in agriculture, agri-business, or an acceptable combination of experience and education.
- Proven ability in logistics methods and procedures.
- Grain commodity industry experience and understanding.
- Multi-tasker with solution-focused and decisive problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong time-management skills and multi-vision skills, ability to face deadlines, meet shipping dates, and manage team times accordingly.
- Interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to motivate employees.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle confidential materials.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Rural location, no public transit.
- Must be able to safely lift 23 kgs (50 pounds).
- Must be able to stand for long periods, bend, squat, and climb ladders and stairs several times a day.
- Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions throughout the year.
- CSA-approved steel-toed boots are required.
