Job Summary

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of equipment in the Materials Engineering Nicol and Jackson Hall teaching and research facilities within the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME). Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing support to undergraduate teaching laboratories, including guidance, advice, and oversight of equipment use and safety procedures.
  • Assisting with the scheduling of laboratories and facilities usage, anticipating and resolving problems without disrupting the program.
  • Providing guidance and advice to faculty, staff, and students on the safe use of laboratory equipment and chemicals, testing and layout of experiments, and maintenance of research equipment.
  • Acting as the Safety Officer for the MME facilities, ensuring laboratory safety procedures are followed, and performing regular safety inspections.
  • Providing general support for day-to-day operations, including set up and dismantling of laboratories, minor equipment repairs, and disposal of surplus equipment.

Requirements

The incumbent must possess a 3-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a related program, with 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Key qualifications include:

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills for interacting professionally with diverse individuals.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices, chemical and chemical mix properties, electrical and electronics concepts, and computer software skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in materials engineering, including practical application in metallography, materials testing, and chemical analysis.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team, and ability to maintain inventory and stay within departmental procurement card limits.
  • Ability to work in a safe and diligent fashion, adhering to University policies and procedures, and regulations defined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Working Conditions

The incumbent will work in areas where toxic, flammable, explosive, carcinogenic chemical, and biohazardous materials are utilized and stored. They will also work with/handle chemicals and bottled gases, maintain delicate and expensive laboratory equipment, and occasionally work in a machine shop environment with its inherent hazards.
