Job Summary:

The Mental Health Counsellor is responsible for promoting student development, student success, and student retention by designing and providing a comprehensive range of psychological and educational services to aid students in achieving improved academic performance, enhanced personal and social effectiveness, and appropriate educational and career plans.

Purpose and Key Functions:
  • Develop and implement effective treatment plans to support students' mental health and well-being.
  • Conduct in-depth assessments and provide counselling and therapy services to students, utilizing evidence-based theoretical models and best practices.
  • Provide referrals to community resources and coordinate with professionals within the Student Wellness Centre to ensure students receive comprehensive support.
  • Aid students in identifying and solving emotional and interpersonal problems that may be affecting their academic success, well-being, and bio-psycho-social development.
  • Provide psychological counselling services, including personal counselling, group counselling, and crisis counselling, to support students' mental health and well-being.
  • Assess and manage risk when students present with indications of harm to self or others, or suicidality, and consult with colleagues to develop strategies for support.
  • Consult with colleagues to develop and implement strategies for managing difficult or disruptive behaviours.
  • Provide support and guidance to students, including facilitating conflict resolution sessions and providing debriefing services after traumatic events.
  • Advocate on behalf of students for special academic consideration and support students in developing self-care strategies.
  • Nurture and support students, encouraging them to develop healthy coping mechanisms and balance multiple demands.
  • Develop and deliver presentations, information, and training sessions to colleagues and students on mental health and wellness topics.
  • Develop and deliver group counselling and psychotherapy materials to support students' mental health and well-being.
  • Document student interactions, including case notes and referral reports, to ensure accurate and comprehensive records.
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in mental health and wellness.
Supervision:
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers.
  • Provide orientation and training to colleagues on procedures and best practices.
Requirements:

A Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field of study is required, along with 3 years of relevant experience in mental health and wellness.
