Position Overview:
As a key member of the team, the Mechanical Engineering Assistant will operate under the guidance of the TRU Director/Deputy Director. This role involves a significant degree of independent judgment in evaluating and approving project notifications related to asbestos management, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will:
1. Conduct thorough reviews of regulatory notifications, applications, and safety plans to confirm compliance with relevant codes using advanced web-based systems and databases.
2. Perform inspections before and during asbestos abatement activities to ensure alignment with state and city regulations, as well as life safety standards.
3. Act as an emergency responder during citywide asbestos incidents, contributing to remediation efforts as needed.
4. Provide detailed technical assistance and accurate information to public sector stakeholders regarding complex projects and regulatory matters.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution, accompanied by one year of relevant full-time experience; or
2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution along with a master's degree in mechanical engineering.

Preferred Skills:

  • At least one year of practical experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in building systems related to asbestos abatement or hazardous materials remediation.
  • Familiarity with regulations governing building assessments for asbestos and remediation design in New York City.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of relevant local and federal environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Physical capability to navigate construction sites, including climbing stairs and ladders, while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Ability to pass a medical evaluation and utilize respiratory protection as required.
