Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at Johnson Electric. As an Intermediate Mechanical Designer, you will play a key role in analyzing, concepting, and designing production automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, including robot and assembly systems, production gauges, and error proofs.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, and material requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations to ensure the strength and durability of mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with electrical designers to review electrical requirements and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Work with project teams to review machine operations and sequences.
  • Select and procure components for mechanical assemblies.
  • Produce detailed drawings and bills of materials using SolidWorks.
  • Review drawings for accuracy and material selection.
  • Assist the manufacturing team in resolving issues during build, debug, and integration.
  • Communicate with customers, technical staff, and vendors to gather technical information and specifications.
  • Communicate design changes to project teams and managers.
  • Provide time estimates, resource requirements, and progress updates to the Automation Engineering Manager.
  • Supervise mechanical design efforts on a project level and delegate tasks to team members.
  • Organize project documentation, including quotes, correspondence, and schedules.
  • Assist in developing design and department standards.
  • Oversee Co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
  • Adhere to health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Coordinate continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years' experience in special purpose equipment and/or automation design.
  • Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems is an asset.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks is required.
  • Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques is an asset.
  • Strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of pneumatic systems and electrical devices.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Capable of giving and taking direction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • High level of integrity and dependability.
