Belleville, Ontario, Canada Loyalist College Full time

Position Overview

The Director of Human Rights and Conflict Resolution is a pivotal role within a newly established division, reporting directly to the Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). This position is responsible for the development, leadership, and management of Loyalist College's Human Rights and Conflict Support services, ensuring alignment with institutional policies, the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC), and other pertinent legislation.

The Director serves as the primary contact for all issues related to OHRC protected grounds. This role encompasses the creation and execution of restorative justice strategies and the resolution of informal grievances. Additionally, the Director is tasked with tracking and reporting all human rights-related incidents while providing coaching and support to various departments and leadership teams regarding human rights and conflict resolution.

The ideal candidate will approach their work with an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and trauma-informed perspective. A deep understanding of human rights issues, including but not limited to creed, race, gender identity, sex, family status, and disability, is essential, along with substantial experience in providing guidance on complex, competing grounds.

The EDI Division at Loyalist College is dedicated to fostering a culture that reflects the institution's core values of care, creativity, inclusivity, accountability, and engagement. This division aims to prioritize safety and trust, promoting honesty, dignity, and fairness in all interactions.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management of Human Rights Services

  • Act as the primary resource for human rights conflict support, ensuring a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist approach for the Loyalist College community, including staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
  • Evaluate, advise on, and implement existing human rights policies and procedures while drafting new guidelines that align with Loyalist's values and strategic EDI objectives.
  • Facilitate collaboration and resolution of informal complaints through alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice methodologies.
  • Oversee caseload management, coordinating with internal or external resources as necessary to ensure timely and fair processes.
  • Continuously assess and support the human rights needs of the Loyalist community across all college locations.
  • Design and implement programs, initiatives, and campaigns to foster a culture of respect and awareness regarding human rights at Loyalist.
  • Build trust within the college community by maintaining confidentiality and ensuring impartiality in the execution of procedures.
  • Recruit, train, and manage student staff and other personnel as needed, focusing on sustainable succession and inclusive hiring practices.
  • Collect and analyze data related to human rights complaints and consultations, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Lead the development and delivery of human rights training and professional development programs.
  • Provide regular updates and contribute to the annual EDI report as required.

Coaching, Consulting, and Case Management

  • Collaborate with employee and student-facing departments to ensure a consistent approach to human rights intake and resolution that is trauma-informed and anti-oppressive.
  • Monitor and report on human rights cases across various departments and divisions.
  • Offer expert guidance on complex human rights matters, including navigating competing grounds.
  • Provide informed advice based on knowledge of relevant case law, policies, and practices at comparable institutions.
  • Advise on strategies that promote substantive equality in alignment with AODA, OHRC, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in education, law, equity, social sciences, social work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification in alternative dispute resolution, anti-racism, anti-oppressive practices, and familiarity with Indigenous knowledge systems is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in a human rights context, ideally within post-secondary education, with a focus on supporting marginalized communities.
  • Personal experience within one or more marginalized communities and a demonstrated ability to apply an intersectional approach.
  • Proven track record of advising faculty, students, staff, and leaders on human rights issues and related policies.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and the ability to build trust across diverse groups.
  • Commitment to understanding and promoting Indigenous ways of knowing and reconciliation.
  • In-depth knowledge of current human rights legislation and case law in Ontario.
  • Experience in mentoring and supporting direct reports.
